Knowledge-course

Characteristics

The electronic knowledge-course (e-kc) is inseparable linked to the run Heilbronn – Karlsruhe – Strasbourg – Athens and its message. Parallel to the marathon, the e-kc will cover the 2200km distance as well.Precisely: The electronic course from and to Heilbronn via Heidelberg, Ulm, Stuttgart and Tübingen (750km) will be run through three times.

As Heilbronn will be the starting point of the real course (20.09.2010) it was chosen as the starting point of the e-kc as well. The other stages of the course will be Heidelberg, Ulm and Stuttgart, places of knowledge, medical and technological centres. We chose the course through these cities, as active participants of the e-kc  live and work around this area, thus making it the ideal course.

Further Heilbronn is easy to reach for the majority of experts involved, making it possible for the most of them to participate at the start of the marathon. This is important for the later quality and quantity of the scientific contributions, being present at the beginning of the course bonds the participants to each other and to the idea of the whole project.

On the described course, experts and interested parties acquire, evaluate and develop knowledge, ideas and concepts, exchanging information via the most modern IT infrastructures. All this will be managed parallel to the marathon.

Both, the e-kc as well as me, will arrive the finishing line in Athens at the same time.

Themes

Themes of the e-kc, developed on the 2.200 km long course, will be:

  1. Introducing studies and examples on how an appropriate run training can induce a medical benefit. Among others, studies on running concerning health-prevention, therapy-potentials as well as studies on running sports and nutrition are discussed. Innovative treadmill-concepts are introduced as well.

A lot of treadmill-studies with different treadmill-types are backed up by the

    • Spiroergometry (measuring exhalation-air during physical strain)
    • Blood analysis
    • New image procedures, which help evaluate molecular processes in the human body

Especially in Heidelberg a well-known network of experts are ready to do further research on this topic.

  2. When looking at the newest studies concerning the medical benefits one achieves through exercise, one must ask the question: Why is it that on the one hand running-sport in a healthy dosage has this huge positive effect on one’s health, on the other hand why is it that a lack of exercise has these dramatically fatal effect? (Diabetes II, coronary heart disease)

The new field of Evolutionary medicine or Darwinian medicine gives us the information we need.
(see 9th World Congress of Perinatal Medicinehttp://charite300.charite.de/)

Evolutionary medicine explains that the human body is, due to evolution,  physically strong and our organs bear a lot of stamina. Which is why we con focus on moving and running, or rather we have to focus on it! The field of evolutionary medicine is already aware that movement and exercise are major when it comes to physical health. This is why evolutionary medicine is dealt with in an extra theme.

Another advantage is that I can contribute information on the topic evolutionary medicine right to the e-kc while in the marathon. Due to the intensity of the course, the movement-sequence evolves back to a native and primitive Stone Age running style, which can be evaluated on the later e-kc.

Another aspect should be to demonstrate on how our potential for running sports can be exposed and refined.

  3. Generating the scientific facts from the topics 1 and 2 is important, evenly important are building up and establishing structures which help to use this information.

The biggest part of mankind is involved into the working world, and if this important social group recognizes that it is directly affected  by this knowledge, it might lead to a new focus.

Modern business companies should help building up these health-supporting structures, for the health of their employees as well as their economical self-interest. By setting up an innovative health-management system, stressing endurance sports, they can achieve synergetic effects with the whole staff.

E.g. establishing morning exercise, possibilities for sport during lunchtime, company courses, offering healthy menus in the canteen.

Benefits are not only the increasing health of the employees, rather a better vitality and well-being result in a highly underestimated economic factor. (e.g. less sick leaves)

In order to emphasize this theme, exemplary and successful health-projects from different companies are introduced and explained.

  4. Healthy and content staff is not only of concern to companies, but for social institutions and hospitals in particular.

We will focus on best-practice examples in social- and health institutions, as well as the essential steps to be taken in order to support the respective groups (adolescents, mentally disabled, etc.).

The first example to be mentioned is the running-sports sponsorship of the “Evangelische Stiftung Lichtenstern”.

  5. Contributing important data for the health of human-kind, the information technology cannot and may not be absent at the e-kc. The study course “medical informatics” (MI), established since 1972 at the University of Heidelberg and the University of applied sciences in Heilbronn, educates IT-specialists for health care systems. The graduates are skilled in developing systems supporting health institutions and hospital staff in treating patients or preventing sickness altogether.

As already mentioned, the themes 1-5 will be passing the course from and to Heilbronn via Heidelberg, Ulm and Stuttgart four times and this at the same time I will be on the course Heilbronn-Karlsruhe-Strasbourg-Athens. Of course anyone who is willing can participate at e-kc, even aside the course.

The qualified and significant contributions, suggestions and ideas can then be sent to Heilbronn (University of applied sciences, Medical Informatics) where they will be preprocessed and integrated into the e-kc. Especially the University of applied sciences Heilbronn (Prof. Dr. Martin Haag, students council of MI, among others) dedicates a lot of time and effort into the e-kc. Be it the technical structuring, the updating of the contributions as well as contributing lots of interesting information themselves. The newspaper “Heilbronner Stimme” (Mr. Schaarschmidt) is helping out with the complex IT-structure as well.

Pace of the e-kc

The pace of the e-kc is dependent on the contributions and the commitment of the participating cities. The e-kc will make a brief stop in Heilbronn every time it passes, so the contributions and new contents can be integrated into the e-kc.

During the last phase of the course, matched with the status of Jürgen Mennel, all of the material in the e-kc will be summarized and recapitulated.

The goal

During the final event of the e-kc at the University of Heilbronn, that will be held parallel to the last steps on the course to Athens, the highlights and conclusions of the e-kc will be illustrated once more. Simultaneous to the crossing of the finishing line in Athens, the 2.500th anniversary of the marathon will be celebrated with a “symbolic click”, sending the results of the e-kc straight to Athens.

With this simultaneous finish of both the 2.200 km course by foot and e-kc we are proud to honor the 2.500 years of the marathon, with the help of contributions from the world of sport, health and economy.

The knowledge acquired hereby can be used by everyone as an impulse or a basis for a further development of the structures or the e-kc .

After Athens

The main question after crossing the finishing line may be:

How can the knowledge acquired by the e-kc be restructured so it can be visualized on a new platform? The idea is to coordinate the new knowledge, so that the identified potentials can be listed on a new platform, allowing an additional and corrective knowledge-generation.
